Looking forward to the Welsh Corgi Club of Victoria Championship Show on Saturday. Looks like a beautiful sunny day for our show, which will be held in Ring 8 on the main lawn area. Great entry of 22 Cardigans and 58 Pembrokes for our breed judge Kim Nielsen

Ring 8 is the second ring on the Westernport Hwy side of the main lawn:

An Open Invitation

Do you want to be a Corgi Owner? Are you a Corgi Lover? Would you like to find out more about our fantastic breeds?

The Welsh Corgi Club of Victoria is holding a Championship Show on Saturday, 11th June 2016. We would love it if you could come along; entry is free and there is heaps of parking.

This is a great opportunity to talk to other Corgi enthusiasts, Corgi owners, and Corgi breeders. Find out what it means to own a Corgi, and what a Corgi expects from you.

The show is expected to run for around 2 hours and dogs of both breeds, Welsh Corgi Cardigan and Welsh Corgi Pembroke, will be on show. Exhibitors, Club Members and Members of the Club Committee (and their dogs) will be on-hand to answer questions and chat until at least 2pm.

The show starts at 10am and will be held at the State Dog Centre (KCC Park), 655 Westernport Hwy, Skye 3977 (Melways 128 J12 / https://goo.gl/maps/sz36WcvvXgD2). The show is being held in conjunction with the Working Dog Club of Victoria Championship Show. A PDF copy of this invitation is available.

Voluntary Register of Heritable Diseases

There are two heritable diseases that require testing for Corgis: Von Willebrands Disease 1 in Pembrokes and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in Cardigans.

There are relatively affordable DNA tests available for both of these diseases. Owners will be sent results identifying their dog as belonging to one of three categories:

  • Clear: the dog has 2 copies of the normal gene and will neither develop the disease, nor pass a copy of the gene to any of its offspring.
  • Carrier: the dog has one copy of the normal gene and one copy of the mutant gene that causes the disease. It will not develop the disease but will pass on the defective gene to 50% (on average) of its offspring.
  • Affected: the dog has two copies of the mutation and is affected with the disease. It will develop the disease at some stage in its life, assuming it lives to an appropriate age.

Carriers can still be bred to clear dogs. On average, 50% of such a litter will be clear and 50% carriers; there can be no affected puppies produced from such a mating. Pups which will be used for breeding can themselves be DNA tested to determine whether they are clear or carrier.

The Welsh Corgi Club of Victoria has decided to offer a voluntary register for both Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis to assist members in trying to remove these diseases from our breeds.

To place your dog on the register please forward a copy of the dog’s pedigree and the test results including the dog’s registration number to Matthew Markham at . The register will be available to all current members of the club on application.

2015 Championship Show Update

Janice Cook, our Show Secretary, recently posted the following about the 2015 Championship Show on the Corgis Down Under Group on facebook:

I am pleased to say there is an excellent entry of 105 individual dogs. The Catalogue is now finalised and exhibit numbers should be in the post tomorrow (19 October 2015). For those who have requested to pick up their numbers on the day, I will have them ready and waiting for you.

As normal the Committee have requested an outside ring for the Show, so please remember to pack your outside showing gear. In the event that bad weather or strong winds are predicted for Saturday, 31st October we will move inside.

As soon as Dogs Victoria inform us of the ring that they have allocated us I will post another update.
